Gemsbok Breeding Program

Today, Texas gemsbok herds are a blend of these lineages, with many herds exhibiting more Angolan traits. Some of the early shipments included Angolan gemsbok through Namibia during the civil war years, when Angola itself was not exporting wildlife. Through decades of mixing and selective breeding, Texas gemsbok no longer perfectly match the distinct Kalahari look and generally lack the horn growth capacity of the original Kalahari stock.

Angolan-bred gemsbok in Texas have more difficulty surpassing 40 inches in horn length, whereas Kalahari gemsbok can often exceed 40 inches, with some documented specimens reaching as large as 49 inches.

What if you could see Gemsbok in a new way…..

Most gemsbok in Texas trace their origins to Namibia, Angola, and South Africa. However, they do not come from a single, well-documented source population.

When they were first imported,

primarily in the 1970s and 1980s.

Over time, private ranchers mixed these populations without record-keeping.
